Mama Drake, as she’s known to many on campus, is practically family to the numerous students she encounters as the president’s assistant. So it’s not surprising that the alumna, staff member and parent of a current student is honoring her family with a significant commitment to scholarships as part of the Centennial Campaign.
Debra will endow four scholarships through a gift of life insurance. One is for her persevering grandmother, who completed her bachelor’s degree at age 72. Another provides emergency funds for LGBT students in honor of a friend who passed away. The third is named for her children, and the fourth is for her parents. That one provides last-dollar support for students who have run out of all other options. It’s her way of thanking her parents, who have always been there for her — and ensures that Debra, as she is now, will always be a force Kent State students can count on.
